An NYPD cruiser was left smeared with blood and a suspect remains at large after a man was stabbed several times on New Year's Eve just steps away from where thousands will gather for the annual ball drop in Times Square.

A spokesperson for the NYPD described the homeless victim, 41, as being 'uncooperative' after he was stabbed around eight times on the street close to west 40th street and 7th avenue around 11 am.

According to the police, the victim is being treated at Bellevue Hospital and is in serious but stable condition.

The suspect was wearing a ski mask, black jacket, black pants and white sneakers, and carrying a red bag. After the stabbing, the suspect flagged down an NYPD cruiser asking for help, reports the New York Daily News.

From there, the suspect ran from the scene. He was last seen heading south down 7th avenue towards a subway station. Police believe that the suspect and the victim know each other.

At the time of writing, no arrests have been made. The victim's uncooperative attitude has hampered the investigation, police said.

Fatal stabbings and slashings are up an alarming 37 percent in the Big Apple this year. The NYPD has logged 96 blade-involved killings so far in 2022, compared with 70 for the same period in 2021, when such offenses were already up from prior years.

Overall, stabbings and slashings are up 10 percent for the year, with 4,344 compared to 3,954 last year.
