Brazilian authorities are reviving an investigation into U.S. Republican Congressman-elect George Santos of New York, it was reported on Monday.

The criminal case had been suspended for nearly 10 years after authorities in Rio de Janeiro failed to locate Santos. Its revival was reported by the New York Times.

Santos is accused of using a stolen checkbook to spend almost $700 under a false name. It reportedly occurred at a clothing store in the Brazilian city of Niterói.

The gay pro-Trump Republican, who flipped New York's blue 3rd Congressional District in the midterms, has seen nearly every facet of his purported backstory unravel just weeks before his ascent to Capitol Hill.
