Water rescues are underway in parts of Kentucky to save people trapped in cars and flooded homes as a powerful storm continues to batter the central United States. 

The multi-hazard storm rolled across the country Tuesday with the risk of strong tornadoes and flooding to the South, and ice and snow to the Plains and Upper Midwest, after bringing deadly floods to California. 

More than 12 million people across the south were under flood watches Tuesday morning, with the heaviest rainfall expected in parts of southwest Alabama and southeast Georgia, CNN reported. 

And more than two million people were under tornado watches across Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Arkansas

Virtually all of Western Kentucky is under some sort of advisory, according to the National Weather Service.

In one Kentucky area, the Greenville Fire Department has responded to numerous stranded motorists and water rescues from flooded homes. Roadways in and out of the city are flooded and resemble raging rivers.  

In Kentucky, rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations are vulnerable for flooding and 1 to 2 inches of rain are expected with the potential to rise to three to four inches locally, the NWS said. 

Greenville Fire Department posted on their Facebook page that crews have responded to numerous stranded motorists and water rescues from residences.

'There are numerous roadways flooded inside the city and throughout our district. We have numerous first responders and road crews blocking flooded roadways.

Beware of the numerous vehicles that are also vacant in the roadways.

Please avoid the flooded roadways completely and give first responders room and time to work.'

The flooding is so bad in Scott County, the school district announced is has canceled classes on Tuesday as a result of flooded roads and rising water.

A flash flood warning has been issued for southeastern Christian County and Todd County and is expected to last until 8:45 p.m. Central Time. 

The NWS said 1 to 3 inches of rain had already fallen from Fort Campbell to Trenton and Elkton early Tuesday morning and an additional 1 to 2 inches are possible.

'Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,' the NWS warned. 

Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott activated state emergency response resources Monday.

'As we monitor conditions and potential threats, I urge Texans in affected areas to heed the guidance of local officials and remain weather-aware as severe weather systems develop,' Abbott said in a statement. 'We will swiftly provide all necessary resources to address severe weather and protect our communities.'

Flooding and heavy rains are not the only threat to the area this week as the National Weather Service also warned about tornadoes, heavy snows, freezing rains, and gusty winds until Wednesday.

A Tornado Watch is in effect until noon today for several counties in central and southern parts of Kentucky. 

And as the the South braces for floods and tornadoes, the storm is expected to bring heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain across the Plains and Upper Midwest on Tuesday.
