A prisoner who escaped from a category B jail in Bedford was recaptured after cycling 40 miles to London.

Inspectors from the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) revealed that an escape had occurred in July last year, which it called a 'very rare event'.

The unnamed man at HMP Bedford, a 400-capacity jail in Bedfordshire, managed to sneak out the jail on July 8.

He managed to escape from the visits area of the jail just before 2pm, but was caught on the A1 as he cycled towards London just after 4pm the same day.

He had got around 40 miles from the jail - close to Borehamwood in Hertfordshire - before being caught by police officers, who had been put on 'high alert' after the escape.
