A group of angry neighbours in a quiet country town have banded together to try and shut down a local animal shelter, complaining of distressing sights and putrid smells wafting from the property.

A fiery dispute has erupted between the operator of Hooves, Feathers and Claws animal shelter and its neighbours in Lowanna, in the Coffs Harbour hinterland, on NSW's mid-north coast.

A community group comprised of Lowanna and Coffs Harbour locals said they were 'hoping to improve the lives of animals' in the region and described the shelter as 'a mess'.
