A Melbourne man has been charged after allegedly conning his victims through the emerging scam nicknamed 'Hi Mum'.

Victorian police arrested the 21-year-old from Templestowe for allegedly scamming people online for electronic goods.

Police allege he used the 'Hi Mum' SMS scam to take 'a substantial amount of money' from victims.

This type of scam, which has been used in many recent attacks, gets its name from a text message from an unknown mobile phone claiming to be the recipient's child.
