A 33-year-old man in Detroit has been shot dead after pointing a laser and firing a rifle at a police helicopter avoiding a potentially disastrous crash.

Footage released by Michigan State Police reveals the aircraft circling a residential area at about 7.30 Tuesday night just north of downtown Detroit.

A green laser, which police say could have blinded the pilot, is seen being aimed at the helicopter before a man with a 'long gun' emerges from the home located in the 12800 block of Terry Street and started firing.

Two state police troopers shot and killed the man, who had recently moved into the abandoned home, and recovered five firearms and stashes of ammunition.
