Emergency services were called to the scene at 1.10pm at the junction of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross road outside the Palace Theatre in London's theatre district, after reports of an industrial accident involving a public urinal.

Firefighters managed to free the man with a winch before he was taken into the care of ambulance crews shortly before he died.

London Ambulance Service said: 'Sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a man died at the scene.'
