Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing a ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs at state colleges.
The GOP governor, who is considered a top potential contender for the party's 2024 presidential nomination, announced the proposal as part of a larger legislative effort focused on education in Florida.
DeSantis, among other leading Republicans, has taken an aggressive stance against so-called 'woke-ism' in American colleges and universities, including programs that push DEI and the much maligned Critical Race Theory.
DeSantis' proposal will likely be taken up in March by the state's conservative majority house
The governor said his proposal, which will be taken up by the majority Republican legislature in March, aims to entirely defund DEI and CRT programs at state universities.
'These bureaucracies are hostile to academic freedom, and really they constitute a drain on resources and end up contributing to higher costs,' he said Tuesday during a press conference.
The immensely popular governor also announced that all students at state colleges and universities will be required to take some number of core classes
