The singer of New York City indie rock band The Walkmen received a surprise in the mail at his Brooklyn apartment recently, as someone accidentally mailed him a person's ashes.

Hamilton Leithauser, 44, who has recorded seven albums with the group between 2000 and 2013, wrote a Twitter thread detailing the strange package he'd gotten.

'I just received package addressed to 'current resident'. Address was mine. Inside package are cremated remains of a man from Oct 2017. I do not know the man. I've lived here for 6 years,' he said.

Leithauser - who has also contributed music to films and a recent HBO documentary about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward - then turned his ire on the funeral home director.

'I got in touch with the funeral home, and the director is a F#CKING ASSH#LE, doesn't give a sh#t about this poor guy, and refuses to take them back. Now I have this stranger's ashes in my kitchen. What should I do with them?'

He then encouraged his 10,000 to antagonize the funeral home involved in the mailing misfire.

'This feels a little bit 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'. In case anybody wants to send hate mail, or wants to know where NOT to die, or send your loved ones, get in touch with Juan's Funeral home at 509 Liberty Ave, Brooklyn.'

The funeral home's full name is Funeral Juan/John's Funeral Home in Broadway Junction.

He then detailed a conversation he had with 'John.'

Leithouser said the funeral home owner asked him: '[W]ell I dunno…maybe he used to live there? Maybe he's dead?'

To which the singer responded: 'Of course he's f***ing dead you just mailed him to me!'

The ashes in the package were specifically dated October 17, 2017 and was of a man Leithauser did not know at all.
