A fully electric Tesla has outsold every SUV in Australia and is now a top 10 brand for the first time ever. 

The Tesla Model 3 came third on the January sales charts, with only the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux utes beating it.

Billionaire Elon Musk's car company has, for the first time ever, entered Australia's top 10 list of popular brands, with Tesla coming ninth on the monthly Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries list.

The first month of 2023 saw 2,927 Tesla Model 3 sedans leave the showroom, even though it has an expensive starting price of $63,900.

The EV, made in the Chinese city of Shanghai, accounted for 88 per cent of the 3,313 Teslas sold in Australia last month.

Tesla accounted for 68 per cent of the 4,852 battery-electric cars sold in Australia in January, with EVs having a small but growing 5.71 per cent market share.

The American EV-only brand also accounted for 31.8 per cent of Australia's 10,426 cars sold in January that were either a battery-electric, a plug-in hybrid or a petrol-electric hybrid.
