Nancy Pelosi is the first former speaker of the House to be awarded a fulltime security detail for a year, a move that came after her husband, Paul Pelosi, was attacked and beaten by a man targeting her.

Buried in the 4,155 page omnibus bill that funded the government this year is the provision covering her protective detail for the next 12 months. Previous speakers lost their federal security shortly after stepping down from the job.

The legislation requires U.S. Capitol Police to perform a threat assessment for former speakers, 'and if warranted, any such former Speaker shall receive a United States Capitol Police protective detail for a period of not more than one year beginning on the date they leave such office.'

Pelosi, who was awarded the title speaker emerita, was seen with three security officers in suits and ear pieces trailing her through the Capitol on Wednesday.

'Shall we,' she said to them as she exited the House floor after votes. She walked to the elevator with the three men surrounding her.

Pelosi, 82, is one of the most famous women in the county and an incredibly divisive figure, inspiring intense love or pure hate.

United States Capitol Police declined to discuss the details of her protection.

'For safety reasons, the USCP does not discuss possible/potential security measures for any Members of Congress,' the U.S. Capitol Police told DailyMail.com in a statement.

Pelosi's office did not respond to a request for comment.

After the year is up, USCP are required to perform another threat assessment to see if the protection should be extended further.

In 2021, Pelosi was the subject of 632 threat cases opened by the USCP. At least 24 of those threats were presented to the Justice Department for possible prosecution. She was targeted by the MAGA crowd that stormed the Capitol on January 6th. Her office was broken into and trashed.

Threats against lawmakers have gone up in recent years, spiking after the January 6th insurrection. In 2022, USCP investigated 7,501 threats against members of Congress, according to new figures released in January.

Pelosi, like all House speakers, had an extensive security detail when she held the top job in the House, which also put her in the line of succession for the presidency.
