A one-off payment of $250 will be gifted to NSW families if they shop around for a cheaper electricity provider - even if they don't switch. 

The Coalition Government has announced a $500million scheme that will give families the money as a credit on their power bill - so long as they use the ServiceNSW app to check they are getting the best price. 

Premier Dominic Perrottet unveiled the plan as he campaigns ahead of the March state election, saying electricity companies would be forced to keep prices down to bring in new customers and keep existing ones.

The payments under the NSW Energy Bill Saver initiative would be rolled out from July 1 this year, with about two million households expected to take advantage of the offer.

'We know families are feeling the pinch right now and that's why we will provide immediate bill relief as well as help them get a better energy deal,' Mr Perrottet said.

'This is $250 in short-term savings while at the same time ensuring NSW households can slash their bills into the future by switching to a cheaper deal.'
