TV personality Jane Caro has copped an intense backlash after complaining that her husband was 'humiliated' by a bakery assistant making a 'throwaway joke' ironically referring to the 68-year-old as a 'young man'.
In a Sunday Sydney Morning Herald column, the social commentator asserted her partner, Ralph Dunning, returned 'not just flustered but upset' after 'the bloke behind the counter' at a bakery said: 'And what can we do for you, young man?'
'Being 65 myself, I knew exactly why he felt so outraged and humiliated,' Caro wrote.
'It is always a shock when we find ourselves being treated differently simply because of the length of time we have spent on the planet.'
But many young people online slammed Caro for over-reacting to the light-hearted jab, calling the couple's 'triggering' ordeal 'first world problems'.

'Imagine you're a teenager working minimum wage at a bakery, next second Jane Caro accuses you of a hate crime,' one wrote.
'My god that was a million times more innocuous than I was expecting,' another said.
'Omg... The most ridiculous 1st world problem I've heard in ages,' a third wrote.
Caro argued the baker's comment was 'particularly offensive because of the many ignorant assumptions it contained'
