An 82-year-old woman pronounced dead at a New York nursing home was found breathing three hours later at a funeral home to which she had been transported.

The unidentified woman was pronounced dead at a nursing home on Long Island at 11.15am on Saturday. At 1.30pm she was driven more than six miles to a funeral home, where she was then discovered at 2.09pm breathing, police said.

Once she was found alive she was then taken to a hospital, but there has been no update on her condition.

The incident comes just days after an Iowa care home was fined $10,000 after it similarly sent a 66-year-old woman with Alzheimer's to a funeral home in a body bag, where she was later found 'gasping for air'.

The woman had been at Water's Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson, when she was said to be dead, Suffolk County police said.

She was taken to the O.B. Davis Funeral Homes in Miller Place, police said in a press release.

It is not yet clear how she was transported from the nursing home to the funeral home and whether she was in a body bag.

When contacted on Tuesday afternoon the nursing home did not respond to questions regarding the incident.

The state health department is investigating. 'The New York State Department of Health has begun an investigation. As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot comment at this time,' it said.

The state attorney general is also looking into the matter, and said: 'This is an awful situation that caused unnecessary trauma for the impacted resident and her loved ones.'

Officials at the funeral home said in a statement: 'Out of respect for the privacy and confidentiality of the families we are honored to serve, we are not in a position to comment further on this matter.'

On February 1 the Glen Oaks Alzheimer's Special Care Centre in Iowa was fined $10,000 after a similar incident.
