Firefighters have temporarily called off strike action to consider a new, increased pay offer.
Some 88 per cent of Fire Brigades Union members voted to walk off the job in December 2022. It would have marked the first UK-wide fire strike since 2003.
But on Tuesday, the union received an improved offer of a seven per cent pay rise backdated to July 1, 2022.
The proposal would also include a further pay rise of five per cent from July 1, 2023.
While no formal deal has been made yet, the strikes have been called off as the offer is taken to union members to vote on.

Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, said: 'We have achieved this increase because of the massive vote in favour of strike action by firefighters and control staff across the country, which made clear the strength of feeling among firefighters about cuts to their wages.'
He noted the offer would still amount to a real terms pay cut,
