A gunman who opened fire on the Michigan State University campus could have targeted the school because they previously rejected him from a job.

Anthony McRae, 43, opened fire at Berkey Hall before shooting at MSU Student Union, killing three students and leaving four students in critical condition on Monday night.

A fifth was shot but moved out of critical condition into a stable one on Thursday morning.

Police confirmed that McRae had a suicide note on his person after he shot himself in the head when approached by officers close to his home on Monday.

They emphasize that the claims he was rejected for a job by the faculty had not been confirmed, but said that it is one of the potential motives 'being investigated.'

Deputy Chief Rozman of MSU Police said that they were currently unaware of any official link between the shooter and the university.

He added that officers were 'confident' that there were no additional shooters despite a note left by McRae claiming he has '20 others' to help him.

When interviewing his father, cops say McRae's relative said he: 'Didn't believe he had any friends let alone 20 of them that would help him… so we kind of determined that he was the lone shooter in this.'

The 'loner' gunman also reportedly ate and went to the bathroom in his room, and 'never left' so he didn't think he had many friends.

Authorities from Michigan State Police also confirmed that they had not responded to any welfare checks at the shooters' property or any calls regarding shots fired.

However they did find his cell phone, hoards of writings and journals and fired shell casings when they raided his home.

Authorities also confirmed that McRae made threats against a church, businesses and a school district in New Jersey in other notes discovered.

Deputy Chief Rozman added: 'We know that he had some connection with New Jersey years ago but we do not know why he was bringing that up.

'It appears that he had some issues with the employees there where he was asked to leave.

'So it looks like possibly a motive for that was he felt slighted, and that's kind of what the note indicated.'

Officers confirmed that they discovered two legal 9mm handguns, one in his hand and another in the backpack he was carrying.

McRae legally purchased the guns, though it is unclear when he bought them and had an additional 50 rounds of ammo on his person following the incident.

He had two additional bus tickets on his person, a loaded magazine at full capacity in his left breast pocket and eight more loaded with 9mm ammunition in his backpack.

McRae also had 50 rounds of loose 9mm rounds in a pouch, as well as two empty magazines.

However in 2019 he was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, a felony charge which should have banned him from purchasing any weapons.
