The best small Australian towns to live in have been revealed with the popular tourist hot spot of Kiama in New South Wales topping the list.

A total of 752 towns that had between 1,000 and 50,000 residents were analysed based on data collected from four million Australians in the 2021 Census.

The extensive criteria used to judge the best town in each state and territory include measuring up the area's prosperity, skills, diversity and wellness.

Specifically, the towns needed to have more than $1,282 in their household weekly income and an unemployment rate less than 5.1 per cent.

The results, collated by The Australian's columnist Bernard Salt, also included towns that had at least 14 per cent of residents born overseas and more than half living without long-term illnesses.
