'Controlling' Ohio mom HID eviction from family before massacre, relatives ... trends now An Ohio Mom who massacred her family in a horrific murder-suicide had been hiding their impending eviction from her family for months, relatives have revealed. Theresa Cain shot her thrash metal singer husband Steven, 50, son Ethan, 13, and father William Felton, 74, when eviction officers arrived at their family home on February 27. Her daughter Samantha, 20, remains in critical condition in hospital. Devastated family members revealed to DailyMail.com that they had 'no idea' the family were facing financial ruin, but said 'controlling' Theresa 'must have been spending the money elsewhere' and planned the tragedy to 'save face'. Steven's cousin Donna Blackstone added that the murders may not have been as spur-of-the-moment as first believed - revealing Theresa had called her son's school that morning to tell them Ethan wouldn't be in school that day. Sheriff's deputies said she had privately agreed to vacate their Ohio Township home that day, unaware that her family were left in the dark. Theresa Cain, pictured, carried out the horrific murder-suicide after being confronted with eviction papers Steven Cain, pictured, was shot dead alongside three other members of his family. The family had recently purchased a new dog, which a relative says may have been bought for Theresa as she was 'in a funk' Steven's cousin Donna Blackstone, pictured, said the tragedy was a 'complete shock' Steven's sister Wanda Garrison, left, added that the family's financial situation is a mystery as he 'worked his tail off to provide for them' The horror shooting unfolded when deputies from the Clermont County Sheriff's Office arrived to serve eviction papers at around 9:40am. Theresa greeted the deputies on the outdoor patio, who were unaware that Steven had already been shot dead in the family basement around 30 minutes before. She then rushed inside, and deputies heard a muffled voice cry out 'No, no, no, no', before multiple gunshots rang out. They later found the rest of the family massacred on the second floor, including Theresa who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. While their financial troubles have been indicated as the motive, family members said their situation is a mystery, as Steven 'worked his tail off to provide for them,' according to Steven's sister, Wanda Garrison. Steven was the lead singer of heavy metal band Critical Khaos, and also authored 13 books while working as a safety and environmental manager for a Cincinnati R&D facility. 'Theresa was spending the money somewhere else,' Wanda claimed. 'She didn't work. I know she was responsible for making sure the bills got paid.' Details of their turbulent family life indicated the 'normal, typical family' were quietly struggling in the lead up to the tragedy. While they had recently bought a new Golden Retriever puppy, Wanda, who had not seen the family in person for almost a decade, said she had heard Samantha bought the dog for her mother 'because she was in a funk'. She added that the rest of their relatives, from Georgia, had not seen the Cain's for a number of years because Theresa shut them off, going as far as to prevent Samanta, 20, from obtaining her drivers' license. 'After they moved to Philadelphia, and then to Ohio, when Samantha was six, she really alienated them from the rest of the family,' said Steven's cousin Donna. 'No one knew (about the eviction) except her. Steven made the money, she stayed at home and managed it. But she didn't know how to save face about how the bills weren't being paid. Steven was unaware, he didn't know until the very last minute.' 'She was very inward, not personable, quite difficult. When you spoke face-to-face with her, there wasn't ever a lot of conversation. She really kept to herself, kept details to herself, was very introverted.' Relatives said the Cain's, including children Samantha and Ethan, pictured, seemed to be a 'normal, typical' family prior to the tragedy The family's 20-year-old daughter Samantha, pictured, was the only survivor of the massacre 13-year-old Ethan Cain was also killed in the horror shooting, and his school has described him as 'a nice, polite young man' Steven, left, was the first to be shot in the family tragedy, and his daughter Samantha, right, remains in critical condition Steven had fronted heavy metal band Critical Khaos since October 2022. He also authored 13 books and worked as a safety and environmental manager for a Cincinnati R&D facility Steven's sister, Wanda Garrison, added that Theresa drove her and her brother apart, including making him move north to be closer to her own family and 'isolated' him. 'She was always an outsider in the family,' she added. 'She was very strict with the kids, always telling them who to be friends with. Samantha couldn't even get a drivers' license.' On the day of the tragedy, Donna said she believes Theresa's harrowing decision to slaughter her family was not 'spur of the moment'. 'Theresa called the school that morning and told them than Ethan wouldn't be going into school that day,' she said. 'She claimed he was sick - but it didn't seem to be very spur of the moment. She had called ahead and knew when the service workers were coming with the eviction papers. I don't think Steven knew it was coming. She planned it.' Wanda added that she had spoken to Theresa's best friend, who admitted the two had barely spoken in the last year as the mother had closed herself off. The fatal eviction was the culmination of a long financial struggle for the Ohio family, one that the rest of the 'typical, normal' members were likely unaware of. Deputies said they spoke with Theresa in the days before to discuss the impending eviction, and didn't expect any issues as she was 'cooperative'. But after seeing her on the outside patio as they rolled up, she then quickly darted inside. After not receiving a response when they knocked on the door, they then heard a muffled 'No, no, no, no.' Sheriff Steve Leahy said it was followed by a 'very fast' succession of gunshots, where Theresa slaughtered three of her family members before turning the gun on herself. After deputies were able to safely enter the home, they found her dead upstairs, nearby to her deceased 13-year-old son Ethan and 74-year-old father William, who lived in the home. Officers then found her husband Steven, 50, on a downstairs couch, with the investigation concluding Theresa shot him first. Donna added that while Samantha remains in critical condition, Despite their lengthy eviction battle coming to a conclusion, investigators said when they entered the crime scene, no items were packed up, indicating the family were unaware of their impending predicament. The Cain family's $299,000 home had recently gone into foreclosure, and was bought for $230,000. The shooting unfolded after deputies arrived at the family residence on Riebel Ridge in Ohio Township in Ohio at about 9:40 a.m. on Feb. 27 Sheriff's deputies said they heard rapid gunfire soon after arriving to evict the family Detectives are also looking into whether Theresa may have suffered from mental health issues prior to shooting her family Relatives have shared fond memories of doting dad Steven, center 'It was a total shock to everyone - it was horrible,' added Donna. 'Steven was a good person, he was so kind and always pleasant. They were a typical family.' Her fond memories of the doting dad were echoed by his sister Wanda, who said he was 'such a nice guy. 'When he joined his band, he insisted that they didn't use curse words or vulgarity in their music. A condition to join was that he would be home to put his kids to bed. 'He worked his tail off to provide, it's a mystery they were struggling to pay the bills - she was spending it somewhere else. 'I knew Theresa was controlling, but I never imagined something like this. She would have to go completely crazy. I just can't image a mother doing this.' In a statement following the murder-suicide, Steven's band Critical Khaos announced Cain's passing to their fans 'with heavy hearts'. 'Unfortunately, our singer is no longer with us. He has been caught up in a murder suicide (just to be clear, he was shot and killed),' the band said. 'We do not wish to speculate or say anything more. For peace of the family and the band we ask for remembrance of a good man, good soul, excellent front man and most of all our band brother. It's family we have lost today.' The shooting has shocked the community in Ohio Township, and neighbors have claimed there were 'no telltale signs' the tragedy would occur. 'There are people who are struggling out there at times, said neighbor Alicia Humphrey to Fox19. 'I think we just never know. All we can do is pray for that family.' Humphrey said she was not close to the family, but said they seemed to be a typical household. Flowers and tributes have been laid outside the family home, as their daughter Samantha continues to fight for her life in hospital. Sheriff's deputies say they are praying she recovers enough to reveal details about what led to the murders. In a news release, officials said they hope she 'could provide vital information into this horrific incident which could assist detectives with answers as to motive, which remains under investigation.' Samantha attended Northern Kentucky University, and her 13-year-old brother Ethan was a New Richmond Middle School student. The teenager's Superintendent Tracey Miller said: 'Ethan was loved by students and staff alike, and his loss leaves a tremendous hole in the heart of our district and our community. 'I think the hardest thing is we’ll always have that question: could we have seen something? Is there something we could have done to make a difference in that family’s life? And we’ll just never know.' The school official said the 13-year-old was a 'little bit quiet but a nice, polite young man. He was very conscientious. 'He just really wanted to do a good job on his assignments and get them all done and he made sure they were done. 'He took over a piece of people’s hearts here at the middle school. There was no shortage of Ethan stories. You just talk and remember some of the better times, and the importance of taking care of your loved ones.' New Richmond Middle School declined to comment on claims Theresa called the morning of the tragedy when contacted by DailyMail.com. Samantha attended Northern Kentucky University Ethan, 13, was killed alongside three of his family members after his mom Theresa opened fire Relatives have said the two children were 'isolated' by their mother after she moved them up north to be near her family A GoFundMe has been set up to pay for Samantha's medical care by her former sorority sisters, which sits at over $25,000 at the time of writing. 'Samantha currently remains in critical condition in the hospital and we would like to try and raise money for any expenses that she might face when she wakes up,' they said. 'We are still unsure of what exactly happened as Samantha has not been conscious thus far, however, we are just extremely grateful to see the community come together and support her in this way.'
