Singer Cyndi Lauper has likened Republican policies around gender-affirming care to those implemented in Nazi Germany, adding 'this is how Hitler started.'

The 'Girls Just Want to Have Fun' singer told a red-carpet reporter last week that she wouldn't stop fighting for LGBTQ rights amid a spate of legislation weighing up how best to treat transgender teenagers.

Lauper, 69, was asked what she thought 'of all the anti-LGBTQ legislation that's making its way in bills across the country.'

'I believe you don’t stop the fight. Equality for everybody, or nobody’s really equal,' the long-time LGBTQ rights campaigner told media outlet The Hill.

'This is how Hitler started - just weeding everybody out.'

She added: 'I don’t think it’s a good idea what they’re doing but, you know, you just have to keep fighting for civil rights.

'I guess that’s the way it is in this country. Started out like that, didn’t it?'

The grammy-award winning musician made the comments as she attended the presentation of the Gershwin Prize which honors a musician's lifetime contribution to popular music.

This year's winner was Joni Mitchell and Lauper performed at the event.

It is unclear as to what exact LGBTQ policies the singer was referring.

But headlines have been dominated by Republican lawmakers' efforts to curb teenage access to gender affirming healthcare

America is considered to be at a turning point on whether it wholesale adopts the beliefs of transgender activists or it stops the movement in its tracks.

In all, 100 bills have been proposed across 27 states aimed at stopping children from accessing hormone blocking drugs and other types of 'gender-affirming care', according to several groups and politicians who monitor the issue.
