They may not be one a penny - but budget hot cross buns have come out top in an Easter taste test, beating some distinctly upmarket offerings.

Asda 40p-per-bun option triumphed for its flavour, aroma and colour while one of the priciest options came in last overall, according to blind taste tests by Which?.

The consumer champion recruited 75 hot cross bun enthusiasts to rate 10 supermarket packs with scores ranging from a chart-topping 75 per cent to disappointing 60 per cent.

Best of the buns were Asda's 'Extra Special' Extra Fruity Hot Cross Buns at £1.60 for a pack of four, which scored 75 per cent.

Which? said: 'They excelled in all categories this year, scoring high marks for appearance, aroma, flavour and texture.

'Their appearance was rated the best amongst all other buns with one taster describing them as a 'lovely golden colour'.

'Most of our tasters really liked the flavour. But the texture and moistness of these buns was what really impressed, with both being rated as 'just right' by 79 per cent of our panel.' 

Second place went to M&S 4 Luxury Hot Cross Buns, which are £1.85 for a pack of four - 46p each - with a score of 74 per cent.

Which? said: 'The aroma, flavour and texture of these buns were scored just as highly as Asda's Best Buy buns, making them a great choice.
