A grandmother has paid an emotional tribute to a two-year-old girl who was allegedly murdered by her stepfather while he was in a rage.  

Nicola James told how Lola James, two, 'loved life' before she was found with 101 injuries, a murder trial heard today. 

Kyle Bevan, 31, is accused of murdering the little girl after moving in with her mother Sinead James, who is charged with failing to protect her daughter.  

Lola's grandmother Nicola said: 'She was a cheeky monkey - into everything. She loved the garden and being caked in mud. She just attracted dirt.

'She loved everything. She just loved life. She was just so independent. She was just amazing - a character. She was 100mph like all of them.'

Prosecutor Caroline Rees asked: 'Did you find her difficult to handle?'

She responded: 'No. We used to go into the garden first thing in the morning and she ruled the roost. We just had fun times.'

Nicola said Bevan 'acted like a big hardman' and was 'unpredictable'.

She was asked about her thoughts on Bevan after Ms Rees asked: 'Did you get on with Kyle?'

She said: 'He acted like the big hardman which he wasn't. He would be argumentative. His moods were not predictable.'

Bevan claimed Lola suffered her injuries after she was knocked down the stairs by the family pet dog.

Expert witness Ian Simmons, a consultant paediatric ophthalmologist, said: 'It is highly unlikely they would have been caused by a fall down 10
