The Skytrax World Airport Awards held in Amsterdam ranked the airport at number 19 overall on Wednesday night, up seven places from its position last year. Melbourne was the only one that made the top 20 while Brisbane Airport landed not too far behind at number 23. Sydney's facility came in at a lowly 49th place. Melbourne Airport workers also eclipsed the competition as the best staff in the region, while the Gold Coast took out the gong for best regional airport. But airline passengers received the news of Melbourne's win with disbelief, with many claiming it was in fact one of the worst airports. 'Is this a joke? I think it is [the worst]. It's like stuck in the 1990's,' one commenter on social media posted in response. The bar is so low,' said another. 'What a joke, the jury has probably never been outside Victoria,' said a third. 'That's why Jetstar travellers still have to climb stairs in all kinds of weather and nearly get blown back down said stairs. Yeah... nah,' another one joked. 'I like Melbourne International Airport for my own convenience . However that is a stretch. Sky bus is great but train to the city would be better for such a busy airport,' one more said. 'Melbourne Airport is a toilet compared to Sydney Airport [with its] easy public transport options,' another wrote. Meanwhile, Singapore's Changi Airport took out top prize at the prestigious awards, knocking Doha Hamad International down to second spot this year. Tokyo's Haneda Airport landed in at number three while Seoul Incheon and the Paris Charles de Gaulle airports took out fourth and fifth top spots respectively. 'We've spent about $40 million, for example, just upgrading toilets and we'd like to think we've now got some of the best toilets in the country. Hopefully it's a sign that investments like that are paying dividends,' he told 3AW. 'But also just the fact that you can walk from the domestic terminal to the international terminal, it's a one minute walk to connect. 'A lot of other airports around the country you've got to get on a bus or a train and it's quite difficult.'
