Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán's former right-hand man is expected to be handed over to United States authorities any time now following almost three years of court battles.

Orso 'El Cholo Iván' Gastélum's saw his appeal process come to a halt Tuesday when a State of Mexico circuit court voted unanimously recognize the extradition request.

His team of lawyers had argued from the start that an arrest warrant and extradition arrest petition that was filed by Mexican authorities in March 2020 was filled with administrative inaccuracies.

Gastélum was the security chief for El Chapo and oversaw the Sinaloa Cartel's gang of assassins.

Gastélum has been in custody of Mexican authorities after he and El Chapo were captured on January 8, 2016, after fleeing from security forces following a shootout at the kingpin's safe house in Los Mochis, Sinaloa.

The longtime lieutenant started working in one of the criminal organization's marijuana farms and rose through the ranks until he gained El Chapo's trust to become the kingpin's top enforcer.

Mike Vigil, the former chief of international operations for the Drug Enforcement Administration, once told Univision that Gastélum was 'very powerful, very violent and that is why 'El Chapo' trusts him a lot.'

U.S. authorities revealed how deep he was involved in the Sinaloa Cartel's operation during El Chapo's trial in 2019 when a federal witness told a New York federal court that Gastélum also oversaw drug shipments from Colombia to Honduras and Guatemala via boats and airplanes.
