New Superman film will restore 'American Way' to hero's moto - after DC comics ... trends now

DC Comics' new Superman movie will restore 'Truth, Justice and the American Way' as the hero's slogan - two years after the comic-maker controversially dropped the phrase in favor for one more inclusive.

The motto's reinstatement was confirmed in a Wednesday press release that further revealed DC Studios has already tapped Guardians of the Galaxy's James Gunn as a director.

Set to release in 2025, Legacy will serve as a return to the hero's roots, showrunners wrote, following recent deviations that included a comic that saw him come out as gay, and the scrapping of the aforementioned slogan that originates from a radio serial that aired during World War II.

Both maneuvers came within weeks of each other in 2021, as rivals like Marvel made a series of progressive pushes that would later be criticized for a lack of quality.

Superman's new, since-scrapped 'mission statement' - 'Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow' - spawned similar backlash, potentially spurring DC's recently unveiled decision to ditch the new adage.

'Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas,' the press release states, before referencing the new slogan.

'He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.'

The statement made it clear that the prospective film - which comes after a slew of clunkers from the studio like Zach Snyder's Batman vs Superman and Justice League - will lean into the 'old-fashioned' aspect of the DC character, something many felt was missing from the Snyder adaptations.

Newly pegged Gunn - a stalwart member of Marvel's stable brought on by DC in 2021 to right David Ayer's 2016 lemon Suicide Squad - further detailed the studio's new approach to the iconic hero in a series of tweets penned shortly after it was announced he would again be righting a DC flop.

'I was offered Superman years ago,' Gunn wrote in a thread discussing the new directorial direction with the upcoming film.

'I initially said no because I didn't have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.

The revelation came shortly after DC said it was tapping longtime Marvel director James Gunn to head the film. The studio previously enlisted Gunn - an outspoken liberal - for 2021's The Suicide Squad with a remake, and to head the HBO Max TV series The Peacemaker

'Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage - how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes,' Gunn, 56, wrote.

'So I chose to finally take on writing the script. But I was hesitant to direct.'

Eventually, after the pestering of Producer Peter Safran, Gunn joked, he succumbed to the pressure, and decided he would once again man a DC director chair.

'The long and the short of it is, I love this script, and I’m incredibly excited as we begin this journey,' Gunn wrote, offering another well-known sign off phrase as a signoff. '#Upupandaway', he wrote.
