Surging shop prices are yet to peak as the cost of key ingredients such as sugar continues to rise, retailers warn today.
Food price inflation rose from 14.5 per cent in February to 15 per cent this month, while the figure for fresh food hit a record of 17 per cent, according to the British Retail Consortium.
At the same time, the prices of non-food products went up from 5.3 per cent to 5.9 per cent.
The BRC said there are good reasons to believe that food price rises will slow in the next few months as UK produce hits the shelves, however it warned the cost of living squeeze is not over.
Last week, the Office for National Statistics put the CPI measure of inflation across the economy at 10.4 per cent with the figure for food at 18 per cent.
