The residents of a small far-north Queensland town are holding angry protests after an Indigenous man was killed during a four-hour police operation.

Aubrey Donahue, 27, was shot by Police after they were called to a home in Mareeba, 60km west of Cairns, at about 11.30 am on Saturday.

Queensland Police said it received reports Mr Donahue was threatening self-harm during a domestic violence incident.

Officers held negotiations with Mr Donahue for four hours and alleged he was holding a woman inside the Love St home against her will.

However, Queensland Police claim at 3.30 pm Mr Donahue lunged at specialist officers with a knife and was shot by Police.

'Immediate first aid and CPR was provided however, the man died at the scene,' police said in a statement.

Mr Donahue's family has since claimed he was unarmed during the dispute.

Acting Superintendent Sonia Smith said a crime scene was established following Mr Donahue's death, and forensic investigations are ongoing.

'Circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated by independent officers from the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the state coroner,' she told reporters on Sunday.

'The matter is also being overviewed by officers from the Crime and Corruption Commission.'

However, the promise of a fair investigation has done little to quell anger in the local Indigenous community, which claims Mr Donahue was unfairly targeted.
