Six Walmart stores closed their doors over the weekend as the grocery giant became the latest victim of the retail apocalypse. 

The chain announced at the start of the year it was axing at least 20 of its 5,000 stores nationwide amid concerns they were 'underperforming.'

It comes after it emerged Walmart President's and CEO Doug McMillon earnt $25.3 million last year - more than 933 times its average employee's pay.

Red-hot inflation and a boom in online shopping has caused a host of retailers - such as Bed Bath and Beyond and Target - to shut down their stores.

What's more Walmart has been hit by a wave of thefts nationwide which have hammered its profits.

Earlier this month the chain announced it was shuttering half of its Chicago stores where it was losing millions each year to year to theft.

At the time the company said the four stores in the city had 'not been profitable' since it opened the first one around 17 years ago.

And last month two stores in Portland - located at the Delta Park and Eastport Plaza shopping centers - were also forced to close down.

In total 579 employees were affected by the Portland closures.

1. SOUTH BEND, INDIANA

The South Bend store shut its doors on April 21, with a spokeswoman for the company claiming the decision was 'not taken lightly.'

 Felicia McCranie told the South Bend Tribune: 'We have 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately, some do not meet our financial expectations.'

The pharmacy at the store will also close but customers will be able to transfer their prescriptions to
