Alex Murdaugh blamed his dogs for causing his housekeeper to fall down the stairs, a damning recording has revealed - despite now sensationally claiming he lied about how she died.

Audio of the disgraced legal scion's 2018 interview with investigators was released Monday by Gloria Satterfield's lawyers who say his latest claim is 'pure greed and self-preservation.'

Murdaugh, who stole the $4m insurance payout owed to Satterfield's sons, last week for the first time claimed he was lying about the 67-year-old's fall at his sprawling hunting estate in Moselle, South Carolina.

The Satterfields' lawyers say the 54-year-old is inventing this new narrative so that he can avoid paying the Nautilus insurance company which is suing him over the theft.

Attorney Eric Bland, who recouped $7.5m owed to the Satterfields, said that even if Murdaugh's latest claim were believed, the money paid out to her sons is not in jeopardy because it had not come from Nautilus but other liable parties.

Bland's firm on Monday released the 13-minute recording from 2018 in which Murdaugh told investigators he rushed home to find Satterfield sitting up in a pool of blood at the bottom of the porch stairs.

'She indicated the dogs caused her to fall,' he said. 'What I'm assuming happened is when Gloria pulled up, the dogs were rushing her for affection.'

At the time, the Murdaughs had Bubba, a yellow Lab, Bourbon, a chocolate Lab; Blue, a Labradoodle; and Sassy, a German shorthaired pointer.

Murdaugh stated that Bourbon was a rambunctious one-year-old who would get riled up around the other dogs.

'The problem is, and why we sent Bourbon to obedience school, as I told you earlier, she's so hyper. All the dogs get stirred up and compete to get petted and to get attention,' he said.

The company shelled out millions to Satterfield's sons when Murdaugh encouraged them to sue him in the wake of their mother's death, assuring them that he would admit liability.

He did so to pocket the money himself, recommending that the brothers use the services of attorney Corey Fleming without telling them that Fleming was his best friend and co-conspirator in what has been described as a 'depraved' plot to cheat them out of the guaranteed pay day, the court documents allege.
