A mother, her husband and her boyfriend are in custody on child abuse charges in West Virginia after police say they discovered a 'hell-on-earth' scene on Monday night in the apartment that they all shared.
According to Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger, two-year-old twins were kept trapped in a room, fed ground beef and Cheerios under the door and given medication to make them sleep.
In a statement announcing the arrest, Sheriff Mellinger referred to the parents as 'animals.' The parents have been named as Michael and Lylee Gillenwater, the other man arrested is Lylee's boyfriend, Brian Casto.
The sheriff said that one of the two-year-olds had 'lost consciousness' and was on 'death's door' when he was found. The tot was in a state of dehydration and suffering from renal failure.
Currently, the boy is in stable condition but will have 'a lot of hurdles to clear medically to see whether he's even going to survive or not.'
