Waleed Aly has revealed why he doesn't think Australia is the 'lucky country' anymore, as parents are forced to go hungry so their children can eat.

The Project host said the emergence of a 'working poor' in Australia, who couldn't afford to heat their homes or pay for groceries, was 'frightening'.

He said good health coverage and social security systems had previously put Australia apart from countries like the United States.

'Suddenly, it's coming for us,' he told his co-hosts on Thursday night.

'And it's such a tragedy, because that goes to the heart of what the whole thing's about. What politics is about, what our budget is about.

'I think we are losing something really essential. It's not just a story of hard luck, it is that, but it's the story of the soul of the country or something.

'There's something a lot deeper going on here.'

Aly's co-host Sarah Harris said the panel had heard countless stories of parents who couldn't afford to heat their homes and provide for their children. 

She said families were being forced to make 'impossible decisions' about which essential they would spend their money on each week. 

'We hear from parents that they pretend to feel full so their children can eat, and not feel guilty about eating the only food that's left in the house,' she said.
