Furious locals have hailed the 'hero vigilante' who filled in 'Cornwall's biggest pothole' to reopen a road that had been closed for a month.

The phantom pothole filler poured concrete into a 10ft wide crater that had closed a road near Lostwithiel, Cornwall, since the beginning of April and removed signs and barriers blocking it to allow cars through.

But council highways bosses returned and left concrete blocks across the road claiming the work had been done 'by persons unknown, without consent' and urged the local community to identify the person responsible.

But residents vowed never to give him up, amid worries he may be charged with criminal damage, and instead compared the man to a modern day Robin Hood.

Nicky Paull, 67, said: 'I know who it is, it's really cool what they did. They did it out of the goodness of their heart because the road closure was badly impacting people locally.

'We have holiday cottages here and it makes it much harder for people to find us - directions were already tough but we now have to explain how to go several extra miles.'

Last Sunday locals spotted someone with a pick-up truck parked by the closed road, others heard work going on from a distance and hours later the road was reopened.

One quipped: 'Maybe Rod Stewart's down here on holiday.'

Last year, musician Sir Rod, 78, helped fill potholes near his home in Harlow, Essex after claiming 'no-one can be bothered to do it.'

Another compared the repairer was a Cornish Piskie - a mythical creature from local folklore similar to a pixie in appearance and said to bring people good luck and help.

Since the road was closed at the beginning of April several residents have been cut off from important services such as post deliveries and rubbish collection - despite Lostwithiel being just a mile away.

Roger Mildren, 78, said: 'The person who filled it is a hero.

'Look at the dire situation I have been left in - I haven't had a
