Brits are flocking to the beach today to soak up the sunshine ahead of a toasty Bank Holiday weekend - and things are set to get even hotter in over the next few weeks.

According to the Met Office, the country is finally set to enjoy a long overdue spell of warm weather in June, with temperatures expected to reach above average.

Meanwhile, an area of high-pressure which has brought good weather across the UK over the last few days will continue into the bank holiday weekend and next week.

Temperatures look set to hit 22C in parts of the country today, Saturday and Sunday - and hundreds of sunseekers have wasted no time in heading to the sea.

Couples, surfers and children were pictured going for a dip on the shores of Bournemouth on Friday, which enjoyed some of the warmest weather in the UK.

Meanwhile in Scarborough, families were seen sprawled out on beach towels as they worked on topping up their tans, while couples lounged in their sun chairs.

The Met's forecast from May 30 to June 8 predicts high pressure resulting in most of the country being predominantly dry and sunny.

More unsettled conditions are likely to take over southern areas by the end of the period, but with temperatures staying above average for a lot of the country.

Their long range forecast from June 9 - June 23 says temperatures are likely to be above average for the time of year, though conditions in eastern coastal areas could be closer to normal.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Paul Gundersen said: 'The jet stream sitting to the north of the UK is holding unsettled weather systems at bay and allowing high pressure to dominate bringing fine weather to the vast majority of the UK.
