A 15-year-old boy with autism was detained and put through a mental evaluation by the NYPD after he told a teacher he identified with the murderous main character of the 1989 film Heathers.
Terrence O'Connor, 15, picked the Winona Ryder cult comedy as part of an assignment where he had to discuss a movie in class at PS 72/The Lexington Academy in Harlem on June 2, 2022.
The film, which also stars Christian Slater as the character O'Connor claimed to identify with, is about four teenage girls faced with JD, a misanthropic boy who wants to kill them.
The teacher who'd heard this tipped off school administrators, who then informed the NYPD, without ever telling the authorities the boy was autistic, father Drew O'Connor said.
O'Connor - who told the New York Post the boy is 15 but 'really more like five' years old - said his son was being place under arrest 'for homicidal ideation and a potential terrorist threat' according to a Manhattan Supreme Court complaint.
