Top comedians turned serious today to agree sewage pollution at one of Britain's biggest lakes is no joke.

Paul Whitehouse acted as compere during the rally, organised by the Save Windermere campaign and attended by 1,500 people.

Whitehouse - known for his sketch shows alongside Harry Enfield and the series Gone Fishing, with Bob Mortimer - said: 'Windermere is a beautiful place and it looks as if everything is rosy in the garden, but in a couple of months there will be huge blue-green algae blooms across the water.

'It happens because of the sewage being pumped into the lake, which makes absolutely no sense.

'It is an extraordinary situation that the people who are supposed to be looking after our waterways, in this case (local water company) United Utilities, are actually the cause of the problem.'

Lee Mack, who also joined the three-hour event at Bowness on Windermere, Cumbria, interspersed serious comments with sewage-themed jokes delivered by his 11-year-old daughter Millie.
