Two teenage boys whose deaths in an electric bike crash sparked furious riots died from head injuries, an inquest heard today.

Childhood best friends Kyrees and Harvey were fatally injured after they crashed in the suburb of Ely, Cardiff, at 6pm on May 22.

Their deaths sparked a riot that led to nine arrests and 15 officers being injured after rumours spread on social media that they were being pursued by the police.

Autopsies found Kyrees's provisional cause of death was a 'blunt injury to the head' while Harvey died from a 'blunt injury to the head and trunk'.

Usher Lynne Carroll told Pontypridd Coroner's Court and Coroner Patricia Morgan the boys were seen riding an electric bike.

Riot police in Ely, Cardiff joined emergency services at the scene of a crash after objects were thrown at officers

Ms Carroll said: 'A short time later, both were found by a member of the public having come off the bike.'

The coroner said an inquest was needed as there was 'reason to suspect the deaths were violent or unnatural in nature'.

She added: 'The circumstances are such that I consider it appropriate for [the hearings] to be heard together'.

Ms Morgan said: 'There is a live investigation ongoing in relation to the circumstances.

'Therefore, today I will open the inquest but will adjourn to allow a full investigation to take place and be completed.

'I will require regular updates on the progress of that investigation and I will set a date in due course for the final inquest to be listed.'
