A simple bank transfer ended up costing one Queensland tradie nearly $6,000 after his money was mistakenly sent to the wrong account after software appeared to automatically fill in a missing digit. 

Michael Richards, a mechanic from Brisbane, was in the market for a second-hand caravan so he could take a well-earned break in tropical Cairns earlier this year. 

After finding one online for $5,900 he arranged to make the transaction via an electronic banking transfer and then sent a screenshot of the receipt to the seller - who immediately noticed a problem.

The bank account number was one digit short - eight, instead of nine numbers - the seller told Mr Richards. 

The tradie then jumped on the phone with his bank to let them know within five minutes.

Much to his relief, a manager told him that since the account number was short one digit, the payment wouldn't go through and the money would return to his account 

So Mr Reynolds made another transfer for the caravan, but weeks later the first amount had not been returned. 

'All ANZ would tell me was that a trace had been done and the funds couldn't be recovered,' Mr Reynolds said,
