New York City is 'code red' for unhealthy air quality as smoke from Canadian wildfires pour across the Northeast sparking warning for residents with breathing issues to stay indoors.

The National Weather Service has issued an air quality alert on Tuesday for Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, and Putnam counties, through midnight.

The unhealthy air seeping through the city is due to smoke that originated from a fire last week in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia that has affected the quality levels from New York City to Washington, DC.

A 'Red Flag' warning was issued for parts of New Jersey.

As of Tuesday morning, more than 160 forest fires were still burning in Quebec, including at least 114 that are out of control. The recent wildfires have been described by Canadian federal officials as among one of Canada's worst fire seasons ever.
