Supermarket giant Sainsbury's has added further discounts to its Nectar prices scheme in an attempt to outmatch its competitor Tesco.

The grocery chain now has a list of 900 items that Nectar cardholders can claim discounts on when shopping in store or online.

Products in food, health, beauty, alcohol, household goods and pet food are among the latest addition to the scheme, The Sun reports.

Dairy and bakery have also been added to Sainsbury's Nectar price range for the first time, with 50% offers on some cheese, milk and bread products.

It represents a vast addition to the range since its launch in April, when just 300 items branded items were on offer to Nectar card users.

The Nectar Prices scheme offers 18 million Nectar customers discounts of up to 50 per cent on more than 450 supermarket essentials, such as washing up liquid, breakfast cereal and teabags.

It is a rival to Tesco's Clubcard prices which also works by applying the discount when customer scan their cards at checkout. Tesco claims that its Clubcard members can save up to £351 a year.

Newly-added products include Cathedral City mature cheese (usually £4.75, Nectar Price £2.75), Philadelphia cheese (usually £2.20, Nectar Price £1), Yeo Valley organic semi skimmed milk (usually £2, Nectar Price £1) and Lurpak 500g butter (usually £5, Nectar Price £3.25).

Lower prices will also be available on a range of popular branded bakery products including Soreen fruit loaf (usually £1.50, Nectar Price £1) and Warburtons bagels (usually £1.85, Nectar Price £1).
