The United Nations refugee agency will send refugees to Rwanda until at least 2026 despite its opposition to Britain’s asylum deal.

The UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has signed a new agreement to transport migrants from Libya to Rwanda, part-funded by the European Union.

Officials from the agency have told the Court of Appeal they oppose the British Government’s plan to send Channel migrants to the same destination.

Its legal submissions to the Court of Appeal said the Home Office’s Rwanda scheme is ‘incompatible with the UK’s fundamental obligations under the Refugee Convention’.

It added that the UNHCR ‘maintains its unequivocal position that there should be no transfer of asylum-seekers to Rwanda’.
