Passengers on a flight to Bali were forced to circle in mid-air for hours after the aircraft experienced technical difficulties, before being forced back to Adelaide.

Travellers keen to start their holiday were left in limbo during Virgin Australia flight VA113 to Denpasar on Tuesday evening.

At 6.50pm, just one hour into the five-hour journey, passengers were told the aircraft was experiencing issues with the hydraulics.

The plane circled for another two hours, before finally turning back and landing in Adelaide Airport just after 10:55pm.

Customers admitted they were scared it wouldn't be safe enough to land.
