Google is now linking in-office attendance to performance reviews, but the union slammed the company's 'working conditions' and said the building doesn't have enough desks.
Google forced its employees into a hybrid work schedule in April 2022 and is now tying those three mandatory days in the office to their performance reviews, it announced shortly before 8pm on June 7.
'We want to see Googlers connecting and collaborating in person, so we’re limiting remote work to exception only,' spokesperson Ryan Lamont told Fortune.
Most employees already follow the three-day hybrid schedule, according to an internal email, viewed by the Wall Street Journal.
'We’ve heard from Googlers that those who spend at least three days a week in the office feel more connected to other Googlers, and that this effect is magnified when teammates work from the same location,' Fiona Cicconi, Chief People Officer, wrote. 'Of course, not everyone believes in "magical hallway conversations," but there’s no question that working together in the same room makes a positive difference.'
The IT giant did not specify how attendance would affect reviews. DailyMail.com has contacted Google for comment.
