A wealthy paedophile who owes his victim more than $5million in compensation has not paid a cent after offloading all his assets while he was in jail.

John Wayne Millwood, an art collector who ran a pathology services firm in Tasmaniapleaded guilty to maintaining a sexual relationship with someone under 17 and was jailed for a maximum of four years in December 2016.

He had abused his victim, known as ZAB, under the guise of medical examinations in the 1980s when the boy was aged between ten and 15.

On the same day Millwood was sentenced he began selling or giving away assets worth millions of dollars, having been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer.

He was released from prison in 2019.

In December 2021, the Tasmanian Supreme Court ordered Millwood pay his victim $5.313million in compensation, but he has not produced a cent of that money.

The 77-year-old, who was once feted in Tasmanian society, has been declared bankrupt and is living off a pension of $1,200 a fortnight.

Bankruptcy trustee Sheahan Lock Partners is attempting to recover Millwood's assets through the Federal Court so that his victim can be paid.

Millwood, who was described by the Tasmanian Parole Board as 'narcissistic and morally bankrupt', gave evidence to that Federal Court hearing on Wednesday about why he divested his assets.

Property, shares and superannuation were transferred to his daughter Sarah Millwood in a scheme which also benefited his former partner Sonia Finlay and her son Duncan Finlay.

Millwood told the Federal Court his divestment of his assets was not prompted by an anticipation of a compensation claim against him. He said he owed his daughter and Ms Finlay money.

Millwood said he had not been made aware before his sentencing in December 2016 that his victim had sent a letter to his lawyers indicating an intention to seek compensation.

He further said his guilty plea was only made on his understanding there was a deal with the Director of Public Prosecutions that he would not serve any time in jail.

'That was the deal,' Millwood told the court. 'I thought it was done, otherwise I would not have pleaded guilty. It was a total shock.'

John Wayne Millwood has also claimed he had a deal with prosecutors that he would not go to prison for maintaining a sexual relationship with a person under 17
