McDonald's has reported rocketing sales that have increased by 10 percent in a year, thanks to a viral milkshake inspired by a revived mascot and price increases.

Consumers flocked to try the viral Grimace shake, which was reintroduced by the chain as a tribute to the long forgotten mascot.

Grimace first appeared in the 1970s as part of a campaign designed for young children as a villain who stole people's shakes, but quickly morphed into a cheerful character.

As such, it has outperformed any of its U.S. rivals so far this year with same-store sales increasing 10.3%.

McDonald's has outperformed competitors thanks to a combination of the grimace shakes and an increase in prices across their restaurants
