The number of civil servants has grown – along with their average wage – despite a pledge to reduce headcount.
Figures for the year ending in March show the Civil Service grew to 519,780 staff from 510,080 the previous year – an increase of nearly two per cent.
Government data also confirms the median salary – the midpoint of all salaries paid – has increased by six per cent from £30,110 to £31,920 at a time when many workers’ wages have stagnated.
A total of 27.6 per cent of civil servants are now working at administrative level, the lowest of the five tiers, down slightly from 28.2 per cent last year and 44.2 per cent a decade earlier.
The figures also show a record-breaking 15.8 per cent were recorded as
