MAPPED: America's biggest binge-drinking states revealed... including the worst ... trends now

New research released by the University of Wisconsin has revealed the states and counties in the U.S. with the worst binge drinking problems. 

According to the college's Population Health Institute, Wisconsin has the highest percentage of residents who drink excessively, more than one-fourth or 26 percent. 

To compute the numbers, the university examined both binge drinking (four or more drinks on one occasion for women, five or more for men) and heavy drinking (eight or more drinks a week for women, fifteen or more for men). 

Overall, 19 states reported that 20 percent of residents or more are excessive drinkers. 

By comparison, only five states have rates equal to or lower than 15 percent.

Just behind Wisconsin is Iowa with a whopping 25 percent, followed by Montana at 24 percent, and North Dakota and Nebraska, both 23 percent. 

According to the research, Utah is the state with the lowest percentage of excessive drinkers, with just 12 percent of residents reporting binge drinking habits. 

When broken down by county, only 13 of Utah's 29 counties have equal to or greater than a 13 percent population binge drinking rate. 

Utah County which has a 72 percent Mormon population came in on the alcohol charts with just an 8 percent. Those in the church do not drink alcohol.
