Gavin Newsom, the Democratic California governor, attacked Republican efforts to impeach Joe Biden as a 'joke' as he categorially ruled out running for the White House himself.
He also dismissed fears Biden is too old to run again, admitting that 'voters have every right to be concerned' about the president's age, but adding: 'I want a seasoned pro that knows how to get things done.'
In an interview with CNN, Newsom, 55, also offered unequivocal support for Kamala Harris, saying she should 'absolutely' be Biden's running mate again in 2024.
His declarations came as a CBS News/YouGov poll showed only one third of voters believe Biden, 80, would complete a second term, and as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi failed to offer clear backing for Harris.
