Home Affairs secretary Michael Pezzullo has been exposed for badmouthing several prominent political leaders including Julie Bishop in a series of private texts.
Mr Pezzullo has been referred to the Australian Public Service Commissioner, accused of inappropriately trying to influence the Liberal Party.
A plethora of leaked encrypted text messages revealed by Nine Newspapers on Sunday show Mr Pezzullo using a political back channel to two former Liberal prime ministers.
The texts indicate he used Liberal powerbroker Scott Briggs to wield influence, including suggesting ministerial sackings and which member of parliament should become minister of his department.
One message showed Mr Pezzullo saying he almost had a 'heart attack' thinking about Ms Bishop becoming Liberal leader.
