One of the chiefs of New Zealand's most notorious gang has unleashed about proposed policies from the country's incoming Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

Waikato Mongrel Mob Kingdom leader Sonny Fatupaito claimed that the new National-led government's policies for gangs will result in chaos, instability and breach human rights.

One of these proposals makes gang affiliation an aggravating factor in sentencing, which would result in tougher penalties for members facing offences.

The government wants to give police the power to action warrantless searches to find weapons and to restrict meetings and communication between members.

'I feel that we have every right to be like every New Zealander. They have the same rights that we should have,' Mr Fatupaito told the New Zealand Herald.

The Mongrel Mob leader said members should be able to 'express who we are'.

Another policy the National party put forward is banning gang patches in public places, which are already prohibited on government premises.

Mr Fatupaito said while this wouldn't affect the Mongrel Mob as such, he believes this would be unfair to other gangs.
