Two young trick-or-treaters have been praised for coming to the rescue of an elderly woman who was badly injured on Halloween.

Esma O'Neill was inside her Wattletree Road unit in Ferntree Gully, in Melbourne's east when she fell over. 

The 81-year-old woman was badly injured and couldn't move, forcing her to cry out for help.

Jake Grimshaw and Roy Manning who were trick-or-treating nearby heard Ms O'Neill's cries for help and leapt into action.

The year six students entered her apartment in response to her pleas, where Ms O'Neill had been stuck for around 20 minutes inside. 

Jake told 7News he went in to help as soon as he heard Ms O'Neill's calls for help. 

'I heard someone calling out for help, and I said, 'Are you OK?' And she said, 'No, I've fallen over, and
